Young Apprenticeship Programme

CONSTRUCTION AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT - (BTEC First Diploma)

We are pleased to announce that we have successfully secured Young Apprenticeship Funding for the fifth consecutive year, meaning that we can support keen and enthusiastic young people from across Lancashire into Level 2 construction training until 2012.

In partnership with Eric Wright Learning Foundation and Accrington & Rossendale College, we deliver a distinctive learning programme for schools across Chorley, South Ribble, Preston and Hyndburn, Rossendale and Ribble Valley areas to support students to attain qualifications, acquire industry knowledge and skills and take part in work experience placements in more depth that previous opportunities have allowed.

What is the course about?

Lancashire Education Business Partnership’s two year Young Apprenticeship programme is designed to enable hard-working and talented 14-16 year olds to combine school with skills and experience in the construction industry. The BTEC element of the course is made up of three core plus three specialist units and is delivered at our partner centres. The course also consists of fifty days work experience in placement within a local construction company.

What topics / subjects will I study?

This is an example of what may be covered:

  • Unit 1: An introduction to the Construction Industry
  • Unit 2: Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
  • Unit 3: The use of Science and Maths in Construction
  • Unit 4: Investigating Painting and Decorating
  • Unit 5: Investigating Trowel Operations
  • Unit 6: Investigating Carpentry and Joinery

How will the course be assessed?

All assessments for this qualification will be set and marked internally and then moderated by the awarding body. Assessments may take the form of assignments, projects, case studies, oral presentations, short tests or portfolios of students work. The overall grade awarded for successful completion of the programme will be: Pass, Merit or Distinction. On successful completion of this course you will achieve a BTEC First Diploma which is equivalent to four GCSEs at A* - C.

What Special requirements does the course have?

Learners should understand that this is not a “Trade” course. It is designed to appeal to students who may wish to explore the Professional Routes in the Construction Industry and are, therefore, organised and dedicated even though practical units are studied.

How will I get on the course?

As this is a complex and demanding course you will have predicted grades at GCSE of at least 5 A* - Cs. Acceptance onto the course will be dependant on recommendation from Form Tutor or Year Head and by successfully attending a selection day and interview.

What course / career pathways could I progress on to?

If successful, in combination with at least 2 other GCSEs at grade C or higher, progression options include:

  • BTEC National Diploma in Construction
  • A levels
  • Employment
  • Successful completion of the course does not preclude the student from seeking admission on to a “Trade” apprenticeship

Our Success so far…

In 2008, nationally only 6 ‘distinction stars’ were awarded for the BTEC First Diplomas and all 6 went to students who attend the Eric Wright Learning Foundation, with a further 4 learners from the Chorley and South Ribble area (out of six nationally) achieving distinctions.

We have consistently built on this success, with twelve learners achieving merits and distinctions in 2010.
