Enrichment and Enhancement Activities

STEM Activites

LEBP have developed a wide range of quality activities that support all areas of the STEm curriculum but we can offer advice on activities offered by other providers.
The overwhelming number of activities on offer can make it difficult to find relevant, quality activities, suited to your individual needs. Hence we provide a ‘one stop shop’ for providing information about STEM resources, schemes and initiatives both nationally and locally. By helping you scope out activities to meet your specific learning requirements, we take the ‘leg work’ out of sourcing this provision.

Creativity in Science & Technology (CREST) is a nationally recognised, project-based scheme run by the British Association for the Advancement of Science for students aged 11-19. It enables students to develop their scientific curiosity as well as problem-solving, practical and communication skills for use in the ‘real world’. It can build links between schools and industry or higher education and promotes work-related learning. The Scheme is administered by LEBP in Lancashire. Detecting Science is a series of extended workshops and interactive presentations aimed at inspiring students to take an active interest in science and technology Science at Work aims to promote an interest in science by introducing students to the real life applications of science in the workplace. They are interactive, work-related learning experiences which inform students about opportunities for further study and careers via informal workshops and presentations by Ambassadors from key regional employers, colleges and Universities This activity has links and information relating to chemistry and science careers. School drama groups rehearse and perform a murder mystery play called “No Place to Hide” students. Then the audience is briefed on six analytical chemistry experiments that they will carry out to enable them to solve the clues and identify the murderer. Tests include an analysis of fingerprints, blood groups, soil pH, DNA, fibres and inks Science Technology Engineering and Maths Students work together to create different styles of parachutes to investigate the physics behind drag. The activity can be extended to allow an investigation into the subtleties of small changes in design and how this affects its accuracy and drop time Between 8 and 64 children work together to build an impressive 4m high structure from very simple materials demonstrating the engineering principles behind triangles. Optional extension activities can be delivered to make a Tetrahedron Challenge Day Students work in teams to manufacture rigid tube structures made from newspaper using a STIXX machine. These can be used to make a variety of different structures and designs, working either to a set brief, or using individual creativity A competitive team challenge with emphasis on tasks that promote the application of science and technology principles to solve engineering problems and challenges. The core activities of the day can be run over four separate sessions in lesson time or after school clubs A Construction Skills team challenge with emphasis on science and technology principles to solve engineering problems and challenges. Teams are challenged to work for an engineering company, ‘Red R Engineers’ whom are briefed on a Hurricane that has hit America! Teams are required to work with Red Cross Rescue to support their relief work and re-build bridges, houses, roads and to provide a clean water supply system to the survivors of the hurricane Areas covered include mechanical, electrical, electronic and civil engineering. All students get to take home some project work. Activity days can contribute towards Bronze CREST awards with additional preparatory and follow up project work Maths at work is designed to introduce students to real life applications of maths in the workplace The fun maths Road show is a diverse selection of practical mathematical activates that are graded as being appropriate to students between KS2 and 5. The aim is to stimulate mathematical thought processes in an enjoyable and challenging way
