21/01/2010

ROK Contruction host Fernhurst School Visit

A trip to the Rising Bridge has given Blackburn students a better understanding of the construction industry for their future career opportunities.
The visit was the first in a series of workability events that Lancashire Education Business Partnership is organising with the school over the next few months. Students from Fernhurst School visited a working ROK building site to learn about the engineering and construction involved in building a 4.2 million site at the Rising Bridge, Haslingden.
Project manager Robert Levey gave the students an informative overview on the build project and explained the build process from the Architect to the Craft Jobs and even the Landscape Gardener. He discussed how the build was planned and how it is being carried out. Kerry Whittle the Business Development Executive for the company gave her own overview of her job role and informed students on how she rose through the company. Students really engaged with as this she gave advice on how women can get involved in the construction industry.

The students were then given a tour around the extensive site to see how the work is done and ended the visit with a question time.

Lyndsay Lawson, the Lancashire Education Business Partnership Project Officer responsible for organising the event said that it was a very beneficial school trip and the students learnt a lot from the experience.

She said: “The visit was absolutely brilliant, the staff from ROK took a lot of time to explain how the work is planned, and it was amazing to see how the work is done in stages and how it fits together like a massive jigsaw puzzle. This was the site first visit that the school have been on. The behaviour and attitude of the students was excellent on the visit and this goes with thanks to the teachers on the day”
Lancashire Education Business Partnership later went into the school to deliver a construction based challenge. On the site visit students had the opportunity to see the raw steel work of the buildings.
Nisha Pandya who also attended the day said ‘We wanted the students to use the knowledge they had learnt to have a go at their own project. We set the students a challenge to build a Tall Tower using K’nex. Students had to work in small teams to build the tallest, most stable structure. Students really engaged with this and developed their problem solving, team building, communication and creativity skills.’
Tony Boylan a retired engineer from Assystems UK was the judge on the day and was extremely impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the students.

Lancashire Education Business Partnership is looking forward to working with Fernhurst School over the coming months.
