Visit Our Schools

We all know that there has never been a more pressing need to equip all our young people with the inspiration, motivation, knowledge, skills and opportunities they need to achieve their potential.

Schools and colleges achieve an enormous amount, but they cannot do it all alone. Employers have a role to play in making sure that young people in Lancashire have the best possible start in life.

This October  (18-22) sees the first ever national Visit our Schools and Colleges week. It’s a chance for heads and principals to invite individuals from private, public and third sector organisations into the schools and colleges to learn about their specialisms and priorities for working together.

Leaders from the worlds of education and business have united behind this unique campaign, including all the main teaching unions, school and college leadership bodies and employer representative bodies such as the British Chambers of Commerce, Confederation of British Industry, Federation of Small Business, Institute of Directors and Trades Union Congress.

Big names from the world of business who have already signed up for visits nationwide include film-maker Lord David Puttnam; Sir Mike Rake, chairman of BT; Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO of global advertising agency WPP; Robert Peston, BBC Business Editor; Clare Chapman, Director-General, NHS Workforce and Sam Laidlaw, CEO of Centrica.

Going beyond work experience, it’s an opportunity to think about mentoring, literacy or numeracy support, teacher development, enterprise days, becoming a governor and a host of other activities. Taking part is easy and free. Simply register at www.visitourschools.org and set aside two hours in October to learn how working together can make a world of difference for our young people.

News

Now the week is over, here is just a glimpse of what went on throughout the week.

Leading water boss coaches Burnley pupils

A PROJECT backed by Prince Charles has seen one of the country’s leading businessmen coaching Burnley pupils.

Philip Green, the United Utilities chief executive, has given youngsters at Hameldon Community College the inside track on the 21st century business world as part of the Visit Our Schools campaign.

The Prince of Wales launched the initiative so some of the country’s industrial powerbrokers could develop grass-roots talent.

Mr Green said he was impressed with the turnaround at Hameldon since he last toured the school three years ago, when it had been placed in special measures the by education watchdog Ofsted.

He said: “The young people of Burnley are the future customers and the potential employees of United Utilities.

“Everyone, regardless of background, is entitled to a foot up the business ladder, and I’m so pleased to continue this work in Burnley on behalf of His Royal Highness and the Education and Employers Taskforce.”

He also took time out to discuss with staff about how the business world could work more closely with schools.

Gill Broom, Hameldon’s headteacher, said: “The visit was a great opportunity for students to learn how the knowledge and skills that they learn at Hameldon are used within a business and commercial setting.

“We are mindful of our responsibility to ensure that our students are prepared for adult life and the world of work.

“It was a joy to see students across the year groups interacting in such a meaningful manner with the chief executive of such a large organisation.”
