September 2009

 28th September - 9th October  ECITB Roadshow

The ‘Construct your life/Engineer your future’ ECITB Roadshow will be visiting selected schools in the North West again this year.

This fun theatrical STEM roadshow, funded by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board is visiting a range of schools to promote careers, opportunities and routes into the industry.

The ‘Construct your life/Engineer your future’ ECITB Roadshow will be visiting selected schools in, or near, your area between the 14th September and 5th December.

October 2009

5th to 11th October

Learn to Sign Week

During the first week of October every year, the British Deaf Association (BDA) run a campaign throughout the United Kingdom to encourage the public to join in, enjoy themselves and learn British Sign Language (BSL).
STEM ideas to link in with Learn to Sign week could be: Anatomy, Different Methods and the History of Communication or even how different animals or insects communicate.

4th October World Animal Day

Why not book a day at the excellent World Horse Welfare Penny Farm.

Primary STEM activities include: looking at horse nutrition, welfare, calculation/maths activities,weights and measure of both animals and feed plus extension activities involving habitats and minibeasts.

7th October Engineering Education Scheme Launch

The EES scheme is part of the Engineering Development Trust's range of excellent STEM enrichement programmes. EES is for KS4 but other programmes cover KS3 through to KS5 and Year in Industry opportunities.

National Schools Film Week (NSFW) provides teachers and their students the opportunity to see a wide range of films at local cinemas entirely free-of-charge. 

From major urban centres to small towns, NSFW extends education into local cinemas, giving teachers the opportunity to use the power of film to cover many different subjects.

ALL YEAR

International Year of Biodiveristy (IYB)

The United Nations declared the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) global initiative, with the following aims:

To increase awareness of the importance of biodiversity for our well being.

To halt the loss of biodiversity, which is currently up to 100 times greater than the natural rate of extinction.

STEP into the NHS Competition 

Aimed at Years 8 and 9, the Step into the NHS competition supports the non-statutory framework for careers education. There are also strong links to programmes of study for PSHE, citizenship and English.

13th March National Primary Engineer Finals @ The Big Bang

The Primary Engineer national finals have moved from the previous annual December date to 13th March 2010 to enable pupils, teachers and parents to be part of the BIG BANG fair.

National Science and Engineering Week

 

National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) is a ten day programme of science, engineering and technology events and activities across the UK aimed at people of all ages.

The theme this year will be ‘Earth’. This coud be anything from Earth's amazing phenomenon, Earth and it's wildlife, Earth's place in the Universe and People and the Earth.

The British Science Association who co-ordinate NSEW have a website located here.

April 2010

  National Pet Month

National Pet month for 2010 could be the basis for a wide range of STEM activity; looking at animal health, why certain animals do certain jobs, mini-beasts or even the STEM professions associated with pet welfare.

During Easter Holidays The SmallPeice Trust Residential Courses

The Smallpeice Trust provides exciting programmes to promote engineering careers to young people.

They run STEM sessions and residential engineering courses.

STEM sessions take place in-school and provide a short introduction for Year 8 and 9 students into creative thinking and problem solving. Students work together in small teams on ‘design and make’ projects.

4-day residential courses at universities take students interest in engineering a step further by exploring specific areas such as Biomedical Engineering or Supercomputing in Engineering.

Residential course occur over Easter and Summer holidays and are for Year 8 to 12.

5th June World Environment Day

 World Environment Day (WED), commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

Why not get involved with Carbon Reduction / Energy projects with either Global Renewables Waste Recycling Projects (Primary), Lancashire Wildlife Trust or United Untilities Climate Change Project (KS2 upwards)

LLoyds TSB National Schools Sports Week

 After a successful week in 2009, National Schools Sports week is back in 2010.

The Youth Sport Trust and Lloyds TSB provided teachers with free resources; including teacher packs, great prizes, and visits from British Olympians and Paralympians to help inspire pupils in sport and physical activity.
