STEM Events Calendar

There are many exciting STEM opportunities going on throughout the year, from inter-schools competitions to engineering challenges supported by STEM Industry through to National Science Fairs and Roadshows.

Please have a look at the calendar below to see what inspires you to get involved in the next year.

Remember 2010 brings is the International Year of BioDiversity and there is still time to get involved in some exciting projects.

For all those schools planning ahead 2011 is the INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF CHEMISTRY, so if you want some advice on how to get involved in Chemistry activities or get some STEM Ambassadors with a Chemistry background into school then get in touch!

Coming up later in the year we have Engineering Your Future 2010, F1 in Schools, UCLAN Summer Schools, the Lancashire Triple Science Network Celebrations, the grand opening of the Global Renewables Education Centre at Leyland and so much more.

January 2010

ALL YEAR

International Year of Biodiveristy (IYB)

The United Nations declared the International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) global initiative, with the following aims:

To increase awareness of the importance of biodiversity for our well being.

To halt the loss of biodiversity, which is currently up to 100 times greater than the natural rate of extinction.

STEP into the NHS Competition 

Aimed at Years 8 and 9, the Step into the NHS competition supports the non-statutory framework for careers education. There are also strong links to programmes of study for PSHE, citizenship and English.

Student Volunteering Week was established in 2001, and raises the national profile of Further and Higher Education student volunteering.

13th March National Primary Engineer Finals @ The Big Bang

The Primary Engineer national finals have moved from the previous annual December date to 13th March 2010 to enable pupils, teachers and parents to be part of the BIG BANG fair.

National Science and Engineering Week

 

National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) is a ten day programme of science, engineering and technology events and activities across the UK aimed at people of all ages.

The theme this year will be ‘Earth’. This coud be anything from Earth's amazing phenomenon, Earth and it's wildlife, Earth's place in the Universe and People and the Earth.

The British Science Association who co-ordinate NSEW have a website located here.

April 2010

National Pet Month

National Pet month for 2010 could be the basis for a wide range of STEM activity; looking at animal health, why certain animals do certain jobs, mini-beasts or even the STEM professions associated with pet welfare.

Easter Holidays The SmallPeice Trust Residential Courses

The Smallpeice Trust provides exciting programmes to promote engineering careers to young people.

They run STEM sessions and residential engineering courses.

STEM sessions take place in-school and provide a short introduction for Year 8 and 9 students into creative thinking and problem solving. Students work together in small teams on ‘design and make’ projects.

4-day residential courses at universities take students interest in engineering a step further by exploring specific areas such as Biomedical Engineering or Supercomputing in Engineering.

Residential course occur over Easter and Summer holidays and are for Year 8 to 12.

5th June World Environment Day

 World Environment Day (WED), commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

Why not get involved with Carbon Reduction / Energy projects with either Global Renewables Waste Recycling Projects (Primary), Lancashire Wildlife Trust or Kingfisher Education's Climate Change Project (KS2 upwards)

LLoyds TSB National Schools Sports Week

 After a successful week in 2009, National Schools Sports week is back in 2010.

The Youth Sport Trust and Lloyds TSB provided teachers with free resources; including teacher packs, great prizes, and visits from British Olympians and Paralympians to help inspire pupils in sport and physical activity.

Regional Big Bang Fair

North West

The North West Regional Big Bang Fair will be held at the World Museum Liverpool on the 28th June 2010.

TheRegional Big Bang Fair 2010 aims:

•To celebrate the achievement and excellence of young people through the competition, while educating and inspiring young people not yet engaged about STEM in their future careers
•To act as a showcase for regional and local STEM initiatives.
•To engage widely with local schools, STEM providers and regional businesses and industry to highlight the many STEM opportunities that are available.
•To identify eligible students (individuals, teams and clubs) to represent the region at The Big Bang 2011.

Why not book a day at the excellent World Horse Welfare Penny Farm.
